The City of Waterloo selected this Vitaroofs’ green roof system due to its ecological value. It consists of a root penetration barrier, drainage layer, water retention layer and a pre-grown vegetation mat. Little maintenance is required and there is no risk of soil erosion. This extensive system has very low irrigation needs, which meets the City of Waterloo’s mandate on water conservation. It is lightweight, making it particularly suitable for this retrofit scenario. In addition to the aesthetic value, other benefits include the mitigation of stormwater runoff, improved air quality, a reduction in energy consumption and extension of the lifespan of the roof.
